Find your niche: The Tartan Times’ Guide to Clubs, Communities, and Opportunities at St. Andrew’s.

Our school has an endless supply of clubs, but how many students actually know of their existence? Each of these extracurriculars are opportunities for students to express different areas of interest. Although many students do take advantage of the clubs the school offers, many don’t even know most of them exist. In a school as large and diverse as ours, the possibilities are almost endless, but finding them isn't always easy. That's why we’ve put together this guide: a collection of all of the club opportunities led by teachers and passionate students, all in one place. 

• Newspaper Club: The Tartan Times

Whether you're passionate about journalism, sports, art, culture, opinion pieces, graphic design, photography or simply want to develop your writing and communication skills, there's a place for you on the newspaper team. 

A revived club led by students. The school newspaper invites all students to write on issues they find interesting or relevant and publish them in The Tartan Times website. Meetings are Tuesday during lunch in H2.

• Debate Club

The club consists of learning proper debating techniques to prepare students, as debaters, to attend the Argentina Debate Association (ADA) debating tournaments. The club is mainly student lead, with alumni Fabrizio Giacomino as the club’s official teacher

Our debate team has had many students participate in the Argentine national debate team and travel around the world to debate against other countries.

Meetings are Mondays midday in H4 for senior school, as well as at 6PM through a videocall.

• Model United Nations (MUN)

This club is an educational simulation where students act as diplomats to debate global issues, learn international relations, and practice diplomacy. Students, known as "delegates," represent countries or organizations within simulated UN bodies like the General Assembly or Security Council. The club is sponsored by teachers, such as Samanta Caviesel and Emmanuel Pardo, however, it is almost completely student led by Y11 and Y12 students who have participated in the club for many years.  In the club, students have the opportunity to participate in internal and external models, including international conferences in Uruguay and the Netherlands.

Meetings are on Thursdays during lunch in the Learner Space.

• Choir

The school's choir is divided into the (senior) Concert Choir and the Intermediate Choir, and is led by Tomas Merello. For senior school students rehearsals are Tuesday lunch in the intermediate hall/audiovisuals and Fridays after school from 4:20 to 5:30. Students who participate in this club have the privilege to participate in assemblies, external showcases and even attend trips like La Cumbre in Cordoba, and the United Kingdom (only for Y11 and Y12 students)

• Play (Available for middle school and senior school) 

Have a passion for dancing, singing and/or acting? The SASS plays are the perfect activity for you! Every year, students come together to rehearse, perform, and bring a spectacular musical production to life. St. Andrews Scots School is known for its incredibly diverse and talented actors (and backstage!) and the Broadway quality productions that are performed, making the biannual plays one of the highlights of the school year. Whether you're on stage as a main character, part of the cast or working behind the scenes backstage, you’ll have the opportunity to develop long-lasting bonds, develop your confidence, creativity and teamwork while making unforgettable memories.

• SASS Band 

The SASS Band brings together student musicians of all levels to rehearse, perform and enjoy playing as an ensemble. Whether you've been playing for years or looking to gain more experience, the band is a great place to develop your musical skills and meet fellow musicians. 

Students play a wide variety of instruments; including the clarinet, saxophone, drums, guitar flute, violin, piano and many more. Throughout the school year, the band performs in a variety of in school and community events and celebrations. 

Rehearsals are Mondays from 4:20 to 6:00 PM and Thursdays during lunch period.

• Club de la Expresión:

Founded years ago, and recently revived by Patricio “Pato” Gil Mariño, this club was created with the vision of bringing together students passionate about the arts in all its forms. It provides a space where literature, visual arts, music, film and any creative medium can be merged together through creative projects, such as poetry, film making etc… Whether you enjoy reading, watching films, creating art or simply exchanging ideas with other creative minds, this club encourages you to find the beauty in life outside of academics, and to embrace an interdisciplinary way of thinking, and discover new perspectives and ideas along like-minded students.

• Seekers 

Whether you're looking to unwind, reflect, meet students from other year groups, or simply have a place to listen and be heard, Seekers is open to everyone. Held every Wednesday during lunch in the SEIL office, the club offers a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere where students can connect through meaningful conversations and shared experiences. 

If you ask any member what happens at Seekers, you’ll probably get a different, and somewhat vague answer every time. That's part of what makes it special- a space that is so magical that is best experienced rather than explained.

• Community Service

Making a difference starts with small actions, and Community Service is all about turning those actions into meaningful change. Throughout the year, students organize Feria SASSY, bake sales, fundraising campaigns, renovation projects, and other initiatives that support communities both inside and outside of the school. 

One of the club’s most renowned and memorable experiences is its service trips to Santiago del Estero, where students work alongside a local foster home and community, helping with projects while building genuine connections along the way. 

Whether you're looking to give back, meet new people, or be a part of something bigger than yourself, Community Service is a rewarding way to make a lasting impact. Meetings are Fridays during lunch period.

• Philosophy Club 

Curious about life’s biggest questions? Or having an existential crisis? The SASS Philosophy Club is a space for students to explore the ideas that have shaped human kind throughout history. Through open discussions and collaboration, club members study philosophers, from Socrates to Plato to modern thinkers, and explore how their ideas continue to influence literature, politics, science, film and everyday life. 

Lately, the club is exploring the philosophical themes surrounding The Odyssey, alongside the release of its new film adaptation, while tracing the evolution of philosophy from its earliest foundations. Whether you’re already familiar and passionate about philosophy or simply enjoy asking uncomfortably thought provoking questions, everyone is welcome to join the conversation on Wednesday’s lunch period in G4.
